NDP calls for mandatory labelling of genetically modified (GM) foods

Pierre-Luc Dusseault tables bill

New Democrat MP Pierre-Luc Dusseault (Sherbrooke) tabled Bill C-291 this morning calling for the mandatory labelling of genetically modified (GM) foods.

Several organizations from diverse backgrounds, including Canadian Organic Growers, the Organic Trade Organization and Union paysanne, were there to offer their support for Dusseault's bill.

“The Liberal government refuses to mandate the labeling of GM foods. Given this state of affairs, the NDP has listened to the public and has proposed an ambitious bill. Canadians have the right to obtain as much information as possible so that they can make informed choices when shopping,” said François Choquette.

More than 65 jurisdictions – including the neighboring state of Vermont – have made the labelling of GM foods mandatory. For ten years, surveys have shown that nearly 90% of Canadians support the labelling of GM foods. Health Canada's report on food labelling indicates that Canadians want the government to take concrete measures to ensure that GM foods are labelled.
