Protest in Ottawa

François Choquette shows solidarity with milk producers from the greater Drummond area

On Thursday, June 2, MP François Choquette (Drummond) attended a protest on Parliament Hill organized by milk producers from Quebec and Ontario to demand that the Liberal government move quickly on the issue of U.S. imports of diafiltered milk, which is threatening the income of Canadian milk producers.

“The 2,500 producers who travelled to Ottawa are sending a clear message that dairy farms need protection. The Liberal government must make quick adjustments to close the gap in the supply management system,” says MP François Choquette.

It is estimated that, in 2015, U.S. imports of diafiltered milk resulted in economic losses of $220 million for dairy farmers. The industry is seeking an immediate resolution to the problem and wants the Liberal government to enforce the cheese composition standards.

Diafiltered milk is a liquid protein concentrate used to manufacture cheese.
